Meet Umna Mazumder
Umna Mazumder is a current Doctor of Chiropractic student at New York Chiropractic College. Born in Bangladesh, her family immigrated to the United States when she was very young and currently resides in Queens, New York. Umna attended Brooklyn College before transferring to the University of Scranton, where she completed her bachelor’s degree in biology. She then took two years off in order to pursue other passions such as art, and was able to showcase her artwork at various galleries in New York City. During this time she also became an emergency medical technician (EMT).
Having always felt a desire to pursue a career in a healthcare field with a holistic approach, Umna was unsure what path she wanted to follow. She first started thinking about chiropractic when her best friend introduced her to the idea, and she began to research the profession. They both came to Seneca Falls to visit New York Chiropractic College and fell in love with the school instantly. Weeks later, she applied and was elated with her acceptance to the school. Umna chose NYCC because of the professors who provide a quality education, and also because of the supporting departments such as Alumni, Career Development, and Student Life. Her favorite class is Neuroscience, which is taught by her favorite instructor, Associate Professor Maria Thomadaki, DC. Although the class is difficult, she enjoys it enormously.
Umna is very close with her family. Her parents have always encouraged her and her siblings to pursue what they love, and her mom is especially supportive. Her father instilled beliefs in her such as to be strong-minded and to be passionate about what she believes in. One of the reasons Umna has chosen chiropractic is to make her parents proud and to be able to support them as they have supported her. Umna is expected to graduate in 2020 and hopes to practice in a high-volume practice in the Tri-State Area. Her long-term goal is to open her own wellness clinic and continue to pursue her painting professionally.
Umna’s advice for students is: “Focus hard; don’t lose sight whey you’re here. Don’t forget to utilize the opportunities presented by the school.”
